If you put on great products, will you have great skin?

Inner:   To understand how ingredients work it helps to understand a little bit about skin, which is the largest living organ of our bodies. Great skin, like any living thing, needs great food. It grows from the inside out, so we must start at the inner you to see what is reflected in your skin. Having a positive attitude for life, being happy and grateful for the small and big things in life, reflects on the outside. What you feed your body is also what you feed your skin, and keeping your body hydrated with water will also help hydrate your skin.

A good example of this is when I worked in the beautiful Coromandel area. I had a client for whom marijuana was not just a recreational drug but a real addiction. Mick was referred from a local psychotherapist for some bodywork to aid his withdrawal and recovery.  His total addiction had already cost him his job, his house and his young family. I made a blend for his massage and sent him home with additional blends to put in the bath to draw toxins out of the skin.

I had a phone call later that night, just as I was heading to bed. Mick was talking rapidly and was freaking out as his bath had just turned bright green. He had panicked, jumped out and rushed for the phone. He thought I’d performed some sort of hocus pocus on him. I told him it was great news and to get back in the bath and soak some more.  The following two baths continued to draw out the toxin but not such a significant colour as the first. I saw him again a week later and he was still convinced I’d done something weird to him.

I have had many clients in the past who have been heavy smokers, drinkers and meat eaters and the associated aroma always comes out of their skin as I start to work.  It just shows how profoundly what you feed your body, will also affect your skin.

Just a note here about Mick’s story. The blends I created were especially for him, and were safe to use for the desired effect.   Essential oils must be used with caution, as they are highly concentrated plant essences distilled down to a few drops. When used in massage or baths, they enter the body through the skin. Because of their makeup, they go through the three layers of skin and don’t just stay on the surface like carrier oils and butters.  When inhaled from a burner, bath, aromatiser or tissue, they enter through the mucous membranes.   Either way, they enter the blood stream to where they are needed and their presence can be detected several hours later by blood tests.

Outer:   By learning how to choose quality, natural and pure ingredients to use on your skin, you can help create glowing healthy skin, no matter what your age.

    It’s pretty amazing stuff.

Skin cells are replaced every 4-6 weeks for your whole life. This means the outer layer of skin is made up mostly of dead skin cells, which eventually get rubbed off or drop off. In an average lifetime, scientists estimate that about 17kg or 40 pounds of skin cells are shed and replaced. Since your skin is constantly restoring itself, good skin care over a lifetime can help keep your skin youthful and help prevent premature skin-aging.

So the all important answer is yes, it does matter what you put on your skin from the outside in.

Carrier oils, butters and botanical ingredients also have a part to play, and penetrate the outer layer, providing moisture and repair to the developing skin cells and helping the protective layer to remain hydrated, smooth and supple. All oils are not made equal, so it’s good to know that the right ones are being selected for the job.

Stay hydrated throughout the day. Keep up your water intake, which is necessary for skin to stay supple and pliable. Hydrate your skin with moisturising products that don’t strip the oils. For a dewy glow, use gentle skin-care products that are skin food from the outside and contain natural anti-oxidants, while also feeding your skin from within.

Serums are a great way to boost the hydration and moisture content of your skin and can go on a clean, damp face after cleansing and before your moisturiser. Use morning and night for 4 weeks to see maximum benefit.
